Bootman History in the UK
The Bootman name was first referenced in England in 1175 with its root being the French "Boutemont", the Bootmans were originally workers to the lords of the manor at the Chateau Boutemont near Lisieux in Normandy.
The Bootman name was first recorded in England with Thomas Bootman who was a bailiff in Dunwich, Suffolk in 1225. The family line has been traced back to Nicholas Bootman who married Sibell Wynter in 1566 at Framlingham, also in Suffolk. It is likely that the Bootman line extends back to Thomas but, of course, no parish records existed before 1540. As the Bootmans are descended from a long line of farm labourers we do not appear in any manorial roles for the landed gentry!
There a five branches of Bootmans in the UK with living descendants:
-
Those descended from Nicholas Bootman b abt 1540 and living in the Hoxne area of Suffolk between the 16th and 18th centuries. (Hoxne)
-
Two branches originating in East Suffolk during the late 18th century - their link to the main Hoxne branch has not yet been determined. (Cookley and Bramfield)
-
The branch originating in Norfolk from the mid 18th century whom some styled as De Bootman in the early 20th century. (Lynn)
-
The branch descended from Elliot Bootman b1883 who was a ships cook from Barbados and settled in Liverpool. (Liverpool)

| WHY A SEPARATE WEB SITE? |
 |
| |
The opportunity to publish the family tree exists on several web sites such as ancestry.co.uk, genealogy.com, genesreunited.co.uk, gencircles.com. To do so removes the opportunity to add anecdotes, text and images. Also, in due course, search engines will find this one more quickly for others researching the Bootman line.
I hope that others will regard this site as the repository of Bootman research and feel able to contribute their information where gaps exists. Full acknowledgement will be attributed to all researchers.
If you have any questions or comments about the information on this site, please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
